I mentioned in a previous post that Aretha Franklin is one of my all-time favorite singers. And I know it’s not just me. I’m sure that a lot of people have been moved by her powerful, soulful voice and her beautiful songs. Ask female soul, gospel and R&B singers who their influences are and most of them will definitely mention her name.
Beginning her career as a Gospel singer, and then moving on to record pop, R&B, jazz, and soul, Aretha’s mezzo-soprano was a really versatile gift. Even though the years have taken some of that away from her, she doesn’t really need to prove anything at this point. We’re talking about The Queen of Soul here after all.
I mean, have you seen her performance at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors? A lot of audience members were moved to tears! She absolutely nailed it! Even her piano skills were on point!
While her voice doesn’t have the range and power anymore, she can still sing really gorgeously like it’s nobody’s business.
And now that she’s turning 74, I want to greet her a Happy Happy Birthday! I wish her great health, more blessings, and more years of music!
